Strayhorn Centennial Finale, World AIDS Day Jazz, Birthday Salutes & Great Guitars

Monday 11.30.15

Night Train wraps up the November feature celebrating the centennial birthday of Billy Strayhorn (which was yesterday) with a program entirely devoted to his work. In hour one of the show, it’s classic and rare Strayhorn – featuring him on both piano and celeste, with Duke Ellington and on the small handful of recordings he made under his own name; through previously unknown compositions discovered after his death;  and covers of his songs from Fred Hersch, Joe Henderson and more. Then in hour two of the show, it’s an Afterglow special devoted to the classic Strayhorn Songbook.

Tuesday 12.1.15

Night Train marks World AIDS Day with music from the Red Hot benefit albums and from artists living with AIDS. Plus birthday salutes to Jaco Pastorious (with music he did with Weather Report and Pat Metheny) and saxophonist Carlos Garnett – and new music from guitarist John Scofield, Chick Corea with  Bela Fleck, organist Joey DeFrancesco, and drummer Charles Ruggiero who put together a fun new set of jazz interpretations of TV theme songs.

Wednesday 12.2.15

Night Train celebrates birthdays of composer/arranger Eddie Sauer, pianists Wynton Kelly and Amina Figarova, and lyricist Adolph Green (of the famed Broadway musicals team of Comden-Green).

Thursday 12.3.15

Great guitars and tribute albums are featured tonight on the Night Train, including music from Pat Metheny, John Scofield’s collaboration with saxophonist Eddie Harris, guitar legend Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton with Wynton Marsalis, and the Deep Blue Organ Trio with guitarist Bobby Broom. Plus Swingadelic’s salute to Duke Pearson, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s tribute to Billie Holiday, Bill Frisell’s collection of songs from John Lennon, Alan Pasqua doing music of Bill Evans, and Conrad Herwig showcasing the Latin Side of Herbie Hancock.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
