Night Train kicks off the week with more music from May featured artists John Scofield and Sun Ra, birthday salutes to saxophonist Sonny Fortune and pianist Allen Farnham, and new music from the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, Peter Bernstein and Leslie Pintchik.

Night Train highlights more from May featured artists John Scofield and Sun Ra; celebrates birthdays of jazz bagpiper Rufus Harley, bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi, guitarist Sheryl Bailey, and singer Carmen Souza; and showcases new albums from singer Curtis Stigers, sax and drum trio Mo’Fone, the Marcus Roberts Trio, and Ethan Iverson of the Bad Plus with saxophone veteran Lee Konitz.

Night Train marks birthdays of legendary stride pianist, singer and songwriter Fats Waller, West Coast drummer Larance Marable, and bassist Joe Byrd. Plus more from May featured artists Sun Ra and John Scofield and new music from singers Catherine Russell and Janice Borla.

Thursday 5.22.14

Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the birthday of Sun Ra, the philosopher, interstellar traveler and electronic, multi-media performance and free jazz pioneer. We’ll highlight music from various phases of his decades-long career, along with music from Arkestra members Don Cherry, Michael Ray and also from Pat Patrick during his time as musical director for Latin jazz percussion great, Mongo Santamaria.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
