The ‘Sweets’ Edison Centennial, Remembering Phil Woods & Wilton Felder, And October Birthdays

Monday 10.5.15

Night Train pays tribute to Phil Woods, one of the great alto saxophonists in jazz, who passed away on September 29. This special edition of the show features music he did with Quincy Jones, Clark Terry, Thelonious Monk, and Oscar Peterson, as well as with his long-standing Quintet. Then in hour two of the show, it’s a special performance from the Newport Jazz Festival when Woods was a special guest with a young saxophonist he mentored, Grace Kelly.

Tuesday 10.6.15

Night Train marks birthdays of pianist Norman Simmons and guitarist Mark Whitfield; remembers Wilton Felder of the Jazz Crusaders who passed away last week; continues with more music from October featured artist Harry 'Sweets' Edison, this time with Art Tatum and also the Golden Men of Jazz headed up by Lionel Hampton; and new music from John Ellis & Double Wide, the Jeff Benedict Big Big Band, Andrea Brachfeld, and Mike LeDonne.

Wednesday 10.7.15

Tonight on the Night Train - jazz trumpeters Louis Armstrong and Donald Byrd, singers Helen Merrill and Cassandra Wilson, bassists Eberhard Weber, Esperanza Spalding and Christian McBride, and saxophonists Art Pepper and John Coltrane.

Thursday 10.8.15

Night Train marks the birthday of adventurous trumpeter Steven Bernstein with music he did with Sexmob, Henry Butler & the Hot 9, and the Millennial Territory Orchestra. Plus new music from two releases featuring John Scofield – one as leader and another on an album in tribute to Gerry Niewood – and more from October featured artist Harry Edison, from his own album Sweets, and as part of the lineup with Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges on the Back to Back album.
