Taj Mahal’s 75th, Accordion Mania, Grace Jones & Eno Birthdays & More African Classics

Monday, May 15

Global Village marks the birthday of Brian Eno with music from some of his early solo albums, world music projects with Ugandan artist Geoffrey Oryema, Ghanian band Edikanfo, and David Byrne, and also music from an album he picked as one of his favorites, Fela’s Afrodesiac. It’s also the birthday of Brazilian guitarist, composer and bossa nova pioneer Oscar Castro-Neves, and there’s new music from Italian afrobeat group, the Mamud Band, and the Lost in China compilation.

Tuesday, May 16

Global Village has another bout of Accordion Mania with a wide array of releases featuring the instrument. Among the highlights – new albums from two impressive Finnish accordionists, Teija Niku and Maria Kalaniemi, and from the French neo-folk trio of Maes, Martin & Gruel. Also I.K. Dairo who introduced the accordion into Nigerian Ashiko music, zydeco star C.J. Chenier, Poland’s Motion Trio, and Russian émigré group Ersatz Musika.

Wednesday, May 17

Global Village celebrates the 75th birthday of bluesman Taj Mahal by exploring the world music side of his work from throughout his career. Along with his classic blues and roots music, Taj Mahal has been a pioneer in exploring the connections between blues and Caribbean, African, and Hawaiian music and has worked with a number of world artists including kora player Toumani Diabate, Malian guitar great Ali Farka Toure, and on the Red Hot + Riot tribute to Afrobeat legend Fela.

Global Village highlights some global guitars - including the flamenco inspired music of the duo of Strunz & Farah and of Spain's Niño Josele, and African guitarists Vieux Farka Toure (the son of Ali Farka Toure), S.E. Rogie - the King of Palm Wine Guitar, and Djessou Mory Kante.

Friday, May 19

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Grace Jones, continues with more Golden Age of African Music selections for the May feature – this time from Ebo Taylor, and the Bambara Mystic Soul compilation of music from Burkina Faso, and features new music form Les Amazones d’Afrique, Jupiter Okwess and Tamikrest.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
