It’s National Tango Day in Argentina – marking the birthdays of two giants of traditional tango born on this day – Carlos Gardel and Julio de Caro. Global Village celebrates with both classic and new tango music from Argentina and around the globe. Among the artists featured are Carlos Gardel, new tango pioneer Astor Piazolla, Pedro’s Heavy Gentlemen from Finland, and Spanish techno-tango band Otros Aires.

Global Village marks Jamhuri or Republic Day, celebrating the independence of Kenya, with a program devoted to Kenyan music from a variety of artists, including benga pioneer and star D.O. Misiani, the Kenyan-American group Extra Golden, the guitar and bottle band Abana Ba Nasery, and a new and first studio album released internationally by a popular group of Congolese musicians who made their career in Kenya, Orchestre Les Mangelepa.

Global Village this time is devoted to brass band music from around the globe – including music from New Orleans, the Balkans, Italy, Japan, India, Benin and more. Among the bands featured – the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Fanfare Ciocarlia, the Boban Markovic Orkestar, the Gangbe Brass Band, Red Baraat, and the Dzambo Agusevi Orchestra.
Thursday, December 14
This time in the Global Village it’s classic and contemporary reggae and some reggae from unusual places – including Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Rita Marley, the Gladiators, and reggae revivalist Jesse Royal from Jamaica, New Zealand’s Black Seeds, Greek-American reggae performer Christos DC, Ghanian reggae artist Rocky Dawuni, and roots reggae classics revisited on a new album from the Expanders, and reggae meets Bollywood with MC Yogi.
Friday, December 14
Global Village marks the birthday of Latin music legend, pianist, composer, bandleader and multiple Grammy winner Eddie Palmieri with music from albums he did as a leader, with Tito Puente and as a guest with contemporary Latin band Ozomatli. Plus new music from the Souljazz Orchestra, Ladama, and Baraka Moon.
