A Thanksgiving Feast & More Saxophones With Birthday Artists Al Cohn, Serge Chaloff & Paul Desm

Monday 11.24.14

Night Train celebrates birthdays of two of the Four Brothers (the famous saxophone section in Woody Herman’s Second Herd) – Al Cohn and Serge Chaloff, and features Zoot Sims - a third Brother and longtime musical partner with Al Cohn – in a Jazz Profiles special in hour two of the show. It’s also the birthday of pianist Teddy Wilson, and there’s music from him as a solo artist and also with Billie Holiday – and there’s new music from singer and pianist Freddy Cole, and saxophonists Jimmy Greene and Lenny Pickett.

Tuesday 11.25.14

Night Train celebrates a number of jazz birthdays tonight, including trumpeter Terrell Stafford, singer Etta Jones, cornet player and composer Nat Adderley, and also – in conjunction with the November Saxophone Feature – saxophonists Rusty Bryant and Paul Desmond – with a Jazz Profiles special about the life and career of Paul Desmond in hour two that focus on both his solo work and as a member of the popular Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Wednesday 11.26.14

Night Train highlights new tribute albums (Roseanna Vitro with the music of Clare Fischer, Laurie Antonioli’s celebration of Joni Mitchell, and the Dave Liebman Big Band playing the music of Wayne Shorter) along with more saxophones for the November feature – this time with classic recordings from John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Cannonball Adderley.

Thanksgiving Special: Night Train joins with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Thanksgiving with a menu packed with musical goodies all about food – from the turkey and sweet potatoes to a host of holiday desserts.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
