In honor of Debussy’s birthday, Global Village pays a visit to the ‘classical world’ – exploring music that brings together Western classical and world influences, along with music inspired by Indian and Arabic classical traditions. Among the artists featured – Kirk Elliott from his album with the Orchestra of Unmitigated Gaul, Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem’s first project with a string orchestra, and music from Paquito D’Rivera with the classical ensemble, Quinteto Cimarron. And as usual, we take some detours along the way, including for some ‘60s garage band music from Spain and Richard Thompson’s first solo album (and reportedly the worst selling album on Warner Bros. Records).
(Night Train will feature some jazz versions of Debussy compositions and other third stream (jazz-classical fusions) recordings tonight as well.)

Global Village celebrates the birthdays of two great voices of folk music – Eliza Carthy and Linda Thompson – and highlights some new folk and neo-folk recordings, including music from The Young Folk, John Renbourn with Wizz Jones, Eric Bibb with Far Country North and Danny Thompson, Wee Banjo 2 and Sondorgo.

An eruption of music for Vesuvius Day – marking the date in the year 79 CE when Mount Vesuvius erupted destroying Pompeii. There’s (imagined) music from ancient Rome, neo-folk bands from Italy, and some thematic songs from other places in store to mark the occasion, from Riccardo Tesi, Stefano Saletti & Banda Ikona, InChanto, Susana Baca and more.

Global Village highlights some Latin soul, funk and boogaloo sounds this time – including the Joe Cuba boogaloo hit, “Bang Bang,” Brazilian soul pioneer Tim Maia, and new Latin soul releases from Buyepongo, Palo!, Money Chicha, and the new Peru Rare Groove compilation.
Friday, August 26
Global Village continues the August feature of music from Afrobeat drummer and pioneer Tony Allen with music he did as a guest artist with singer Sia Tolno. Plus birthday salutes to Brazilian artists Kenia and Dori Caymmi (including new releases featuring both artists), saxophonist Branford Marsalis, and old-timey singer and songwriter Leon Redbone.
