A Trip To The Caribbean, Independence Day In Argentina & July Featured Artists – Kila

Monday, July 6

Global Village heads to the Caribbean for music from Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Martinique, and more from Kali, the Solo Harmonites, Kermit Ruffins, Buena Vista Social Club, Ray Obiedo, and Playing for Change 3. Plus music from July featured group Kila’s breakthrough album, Tog E Go Bog E, and some Caribbean inspired music from the late, great Ornette Coleman.

Tuesday, July 7

Global Village marks birthdays of world jazz fusion artist Joe Zawinul and percussionist Arturo Stable; continues with more music from July featured artists, Kila; and highlights music from two exquisite oud players – Rahim AlHaj – who was just honored with an NEA Heritage Fellowship, and Anouar Brahem, whose latest album, Souvenance, is his musical reflection on his homeland of Tunisia since the Arab Spring.

Wednesday, July 8

Global Village has the ‘blues’– with blue and blues related tunes from Richie Havens, Terry Callier, Boris Kovac & La Campanella, I.K. Dairo & the Blue Spots, Real World’s Big Blue Ball project, and the Rough Guide to African Blues among the featured selections.

Thursday, July 9

Global Village celebrates both the Independence Day of Argentina and the birthday of one of its most famous singers, ‘new song’ great Mercedes Sosa. Tango from traditional to contemporary to electro, regional traditional styles, tango jazz and more are featured, with performances from Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla, the Tango Negro Trio with Juan Carlos Caceres, Gotan Project and more.

Friday, July 10

Global Village celebrates birthdays of the legendary Mavis Staples and banjoist Bela Fleck; highlights more music from July featured artists, Kila; and showcases new music from the Trojan Jamaican vinyl reissue series, Malagasy guitarist Teta, and pioneering Italian neo-folk ensemble, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, celebrating a 40th anniversary with its new album, Quaranta.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
