Trips To Brazil, Australia & Turkey, World Birthdays & Best Of 2015

Monday, January 25

Thanks to two special birthdays, Global Village heads to Brazil to celebrate with music from bossa nova great Antonio Carlos Jobim and acclaimed samba-jazz singer Leny Andrade (including music from her new album with guitarist Roni Ben-Hur). Plus more Best of 2015 (the Global Village January feature) – this time with 2015 favorites from Brazil -  singer/songwriter Ceumar and Afro-Brazilian group Bixiga 70 – and a Grammy-nominated release from Catina Deluna's Lado B Brazilian Project.

Tuesday, January 26

Global Village celebrates Australia Day with some music from down under from Colin Hay, Mental as Anything, Quarter Street and Joseph Tawadros. Plus birthday salutes to the Crescent City’s Huey ‘Piano’ Smith, legendary reggae produce Coxsone Dodd, and English folk rock star Ashley Hutchings – and more of the Best of 2015 (the January feature) including the Grammy-nominated album from reggae artist Rocky Dawuni, and music from Bolo, a favorite both of Global Village and the Transglobal World Music Chart.

Wednesday, January 27

Global Village highlights music from and inspired by Turkey – including the Istanbul Oriental Ensemble, the folkloric group Karde? Türküler (from their critically acclaimed 2015 best-of set, Kerwane); two Global Village 2015 favorites who draw on Turkish influences – Efen Lopez and Taraf de Haidouks; U.S.-based Turkish artist Omar Faruk Tekbilek; Kansas City-based world jazz group Alaturka; and some ‘70s Turkish psychedelic rock from Edip Akbayram.

Thursday, January 28

Global Village marks the birthday of vibes player Bill Ware with world-music inspired work he did with Groove Collective, the Rez Abbasi Acoustic Quartet, Vibes, and Greg Ribot & Cumbia del Norte. Plus more favorites from 2015, including the Amplificador compilation of contemporary Afro-Brazilian bands and South Africa’s Dizu Plaatjies – and new music from Tucson’s indie-cumbia band Xixa.

Friday, January 29

Global Village has a little outbreak of classic and contemporary exotica – with music from Martin Denny, Don Tiki, Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica, Joey Altruda, and ‘Mambo King’ Perez Prado. Plus music from master percussionist Candido, a Psychedelic Planet remix release, and a classic from Jamaica’s Monty Alexander and Ernest Ranglin.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
