True Sadness, A Sad Twilight And Wild Mood Swings

Thursday, June 16

3 AM is Nashville-based singer-songwriter Kira Small’s “epic breakup record,” an album filled with songs that detail pair and heartbreak but also provide the listener with a sense of uplift. Influenced by classic soul and R&B, Small’s latest release puts her in a class with singers such as Ann Peebles and Bonnie Raitt. We’ll hear selections from 3 AM as well as music from the new recording by Sarah Watkins, Young in All the Wrong Ways

Friday, June 17

True Sadness is the ninth studio release from North Carolina’s The Avett Brothers and the fourth to be produced by Rick Rubin. The band considers the record a patchwork of themes and styles that remains true to the core trio’s vision of Americana. We’ll hear selections from True Sadnesss on this episode of the show as well as music from Jenny Wood’s Don’t Let Them Get in Your Head.

Saturday, June 18

June 18 marks the 74th birthday of Paul McCartney. We’ll celebrate from songs throughout his career with The Beatles, Wings and as a solo artists plus some classic covers of McCartney-penned tunes.

Monday, June 20

The Truth in Me is a 2006 solo album from Roger O’ Donnell, keyboardist with The Cure. We’ll hear selections from that recording as well as from The Cure’s 2006 effort Wild Mood Swings.

Tuesday, June 21

Oran Mor Session began life as tour-only release from Scotland’s The Twilight Sad but received official release in 2015. The record features quieter versions of songs from the group’s Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave. We’ll hear selections from that as well as from The Cure’s 1996 release Wild Mood Swings.

Wednesday, June 22

Red Sky is the latest release from New York City’s Moon Hooch. With two saxophones and one drummer, the trio’s sound is dark, mysterious and frequently danceable. We’ll hear selections from Red Sky as well as music from The Cure’s 1980 release Seventeen Seconds.

Thursday, June 23

Nineteen eighty seven’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me saw The Cure breakthrough to a commercial audience in the United States after nearly a decade of acclaimed releases. The double LP features several Cure staples including “Just Like Heaven.” We’ll hear selections from the album on this episode of Strange Currency as well as music from Discover, the 1986 recording from Gene Loves Jezebel.
