Monday, October 5

Some fathers and sons (and a few other relations) featured in this visit to the Global Village – including critically acclaimed kora player Toumani Diabate, with cousins Mamadou Diabate and Ballake Sissoko, and with his father and son, both named Sidiki. Plus Ziggy Marley with sister Cedella, Fela’s son Seun Kuti heading up his father’s Egypt 80 band, and Cuban piano greats father Bebo and son Chucho Valdes.

Tuesday, October 6

Global Village marks the birthday of David Hidalgo with music he did with Los Lobos, Latin Playboys, and Los Super Seven, along with music from groups and artists that were influences on Los Lobos - including Thee Midniters, Flaco Jimenez, Don Tosti, El Chicano, and even Fairport Convention.

Wednesday, October 7

Global Village celebrates the birthday of acclaimed cellist Yo-Y o Ma with selections from his world music projects. Plus there’s more music for the October feature highlighting UK folk and folk rock, new music from the Brown Rice Family, Ludovico Einaudi and Amadou Balake, and a tribute to two saxophonists who passed away last week – Phil Woods and Wilton Felder.

Thursday, October 8

Global Village highlights more music for the October UK Folk (Rock) feature – this time including music from Richard Thompson, June Tabor, John Renbourn and Karine Polwart. Plus some twists on traditional sounds from Sweden, the Balkans, and France – and new music from Nation Beat, Vishten and Forro in the Dark.

Friday, October 9

Global Village highlights a number of jazz artists born on this date who incorporate world influences into their work – including Abdullah Ibrahim, Kenny Garrett, Dave Samuel, and Bebo & Chucho Valdes. Plus music from Herbie Hancock’s Imagine Project for John Lennon’s birthday, a cult favorite for Leif Erikson Day, and new music from Chicago progressive marching band group Mucca Pazza and from Essiet Okon Essiet.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
