Updated Tuesday, 10:16 a.m.: The Kansas Department of Transportation says the ramp at I-235 and K-96 will remain open until Tuesday, May 31.

Original story:

After a soggy Monday, repairs to bridges over the Big Arkansas River at I-235 in Wichita are expected to resume Tuesday.

The ramp from northbound I-235 to westbound K-96 will be closed Tuesday for repairs. Work on the bridges began last fall, shut down for the winter and restarted last week. Kansas Department of Transportation public affairs manager Tom Hein says crews should complete the project this week.

"They will be putting a polymer overlay, which is a surface treatment to the driving deck, and then doing some bridge painting," Hein says, "and then of course they’ll re-stripe where they put the new surface on the bridge."

Nearly 32,000 vehicles use that section of I-235 per day. Meanwhile, Hein says the rebuilding of the interchange continues at I-235 and Kellogg, with West Street down to a single lane in each direction right underneath Kellogg. Entrance ramps from West Street are closed until mid-summer.

KDOT is also completing improvements to both the northbound and southbound I-135 bridges over Pawnee, which could cause some evening closures.
