A veteran support group called Team RWB Wichita conducted a tribute run on Monday in remembrance of the nearly 3000 people who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks.
Participants either walked or ran with the American flag around Sedgwick County Park's 4-mile outer loop. Team RWB Wichita's Veterans Engagement Director and former Marine Michael Obermeyer says the run, which began at 6 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m., is a good way to remember the victims.
"The situation from 9/11 affected all of our lives, so what better way to memorialize those people than to carry the American flag, which is a symbol of who we are as a country, around for as long as we possibly can," Obermeyer says. "It's typically about a 12-hour time frame that we are doing this."
Participants met near the Sedgwick County Extention Office to hand off the flag during every hour of the run. Visitors were encouraged to participate by walking along side Team RWB members.
