Visits To Hawaii, Sweden & Norway + World Oceans Day

Monday, June 5

Global Village kicks off the June Islands feature with a visit to our own Hawaiian Islands. We’ll hear early Hawaiian guitar masters like Sol Hoopii, the legendary Gabby Pahinui with Ry Cooder,  contemporary Slack Key guitar players including Ledward Kaapana and Leonard Kwan, and explore some interesting fusions of Hawaiian music with Indian, classical, flamenco and Taiwanese music from Debashish Bhattacharya, Daniel Ho and Keola Beamer.

Tuesday, June 6

Global Village celebrates National Day of Sweden, a holiday in that country since 1916, with a program devoted to a wide array of artists and styles of Swedish music – including neo-folk, folk rock, jazz and more. Among the artists and groups featured are Garmarna, Hoven Droven, E.S.T., Ale Moller with Lene Willemark (from the Nordan Suite and with Frifot), and new releases from Vasen, and Trio Mediaeval with Arve Henriksen.

Wednesday, June 7

It’s Union Dissolution Day in Norway, the date when the country ended a nearly century-long political union with Sweden. Global Village marks the occasion with a program devoted to music from Norway (though a number of bands include musicians and influences from Sweden, as cultural connections remain strong between the two countries).  The show features new music from the early music group Trio Mediaeval with Arve Henriksen, the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc, Griselda Sanderson (on Norwegian Hardanger fiddle) with Ricardo de Noronha, and the folk group Sver. Other Norwegian artists featured in the show include Jan Garbarek, Mari Boine, Sinikka Langeland, Terje Rypdal, and Bukkene Bruse.

Thursday, June 8

It’s World Oceans Day – an effort started by the Oceans Project in 2002 and recognized as an annual event by the United Nations since 2008 – to draw attention to the importance of healthy, sustainable oceans. Global Village marks the occasion with songs about the seas from Frankie Ford, the Marvelettes, Quartet San Francisco, Dee Dee Bridgewater, John Abercrombie with Ralph Towner, Elvis Costello, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Vishten, Lucky Oceans and more.

Friday, June 9

Global Village wraps up the week with a Latin soul and boogaloo dance party with classics from Mongo Santamaria and Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers–rarities, including music from the Rough Guide to Latin Rare Groove, Volume 2 – and Latin soul versions of songs from James Brown and the Temptations.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
