Volunteering Teens Receive College Scholarships

Three Wichita-area high school students were awarded college scholarships Tuesday because of the amount of time they spent volunteering at non-profit organizations.

First place winner Saajan Bhakta of Wichita Northwest High School received a $1,000 scholarship and has logged more than 900 volunteer hours since 2008.

The United Way’s Dwane L. Wallace Youth Venture Grant Committee, made up of high school students, selected the scholarship winners.

The memorial scholarship is a tribute to Aaron Joel Smith, a Northeast Magnet High School student killed in a car accident on his way to lead a United Way campaign rally.
