Tuesday was the deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 1 primary election in Sedgwick County. Residents can learn more about the four candidates vying for Wichita's District 1 seat at a primary political forum on Sunday.

Candidates Brandon Johnson, Mike Kinard, John Stevens and Janet Wilson have all confirmed their attendance. Trudy Baker, president of the Voter Empowerment Committee, is coordinating the event. Baker says the forum will help to inform residents before voting.

“Local government is very important because that’s where it all starts and we need to be able to hear what the candidates have to say, listen to their platforms and hopefully they will answer the questions that the community has," Baker says.

District 1 City Councilwoman Lavonta Williams won’t seek re-election due to term limits. The district encompasses most of northeast Wichita and parts of downtown.

The forum will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul AME Church in Wichita.

To find out which district you live in, check out the city's council district checker.
