In early 2015, Rob Crow of the band Pinback announced that he was leaving the music business. A year later he’s just released an album titled You’re Doomed. Be Nice.. Credited to Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place, the release is filled with humor (and dark humor) and unlike many of Crow’s recordings is a wide-ranging collaboration. We’ll hear selections from that recording as well as music from the latest effort by Nada Surf.

Thao Nguyen’s father left his family when Thao was still in early childhood. Today, the acclaimed San Francisco-based singer-songwriter has written about her non-relationship with her father on the album A Man Alive, recorded with her band The Get Down Stay Down. Nguyen worked closely with good friends and Tuneyards mastermind Merrill Garbus on a record that is sonically adventurous and emotionally complex. We’ll hear selections from A Man Alive on this episode of the show as well as music from John Vanderslice’s 2002 release Life and Death of An American Fourtracker.

Formed in Denton, Texas in the early 1990s, Slobberbone played a rough and loud brand of rock music that was sometimes placed under the broad umbrella of “alt country.” The group stopped recording in 2002, then essentially came to an end in 2005 with some intermittent reunion shows in the coming decade. A new compilation of the band’s material, Bees and Seas: The Best of Slobberbone is just out. We’ll hear music from that compilation on this episode as well as music from Soul Asylum’s 1986 album Made To Be Broken.

His first release since 2012’s A Wasteland Companion, the record continues Ward’s tradition of delivering first-rate songs that cover a wide range of topics.
