Monday 5.12.14

Night Train marks birthdays of bassist Gary Peacock (with music he did with Bill Evans and as part of the Standards Trio with Keith Jarrett & Jack DeJohnette) and pianist Gerry Wiggins. Plus more music from May featured John Scofield and Sun Ra; also one of the 2014 Doris Duke Impact Award winners – Ben Monder; and new music from Pat Metheny, Bob Dorough, and the Klobas/Kesecker Ensemble.

Tuesday 5.13.14

Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the birthday of Stevie Wonder with some jazz covers of his songs. Plus birthday salutes to pianist Red Garland and acclaimed arranger Gil Evans – including a Jazz Profiles special about Evans in hour two of the show. Also more music from May featured artists John Scofield and Sun Ran and new music from Rene Marie’s tribute to Eartha Kitt.

Wednesday 5.14.14

Tonight on the Night Train, more music from May featured artists John Scofield and Sun Ra, and several new trombone titles - from Band of Bones, Steve Davis, and the Jazzbonez. Then in hour two of the show, it’s a special exploring the Bad Plus and The Rite of Spring, a look at Stravinsky’s revolutionary composition and the re-making of it by the popular jazz-rock band.

Thursday 5.15.14

Night Train celebrates birthdays of Brazilian guitarist and bossa nova pioneer Oscar Castro-Neves, the only accordionist to play in the Hot Club of France, Gus Viseur, and pianist Ellis Larkins (including a Jazz Profiles special about Larkins in hour two of the show). Plus more from May featured artists John Scofield and Sun Ra, and new music from the L.A. 6, the Fat Babies and Harold Mabern.
