SPECIAL: Global Village joins in with Strange Currency and Night Train to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with new releases from the new Irish supergroup the Gloaming, All-Ireland Fiddle Champ Liz Carroll, Celtic rockers Bodh’aktan, the Ultimate Guide to Irish Folk compilation, piper Carlos Nunez, and Kepa Junkera’s massive Galiza project with some 200 musicians from the Celtic region of Spain. Plus some old favorites are part of the show as well – including Kila, Afro Celt Sound System, the Chieftains, Dolores Keane, and Horslips.
Tuesday March 18
Global Village marks birthdays of eclectic guitarist Bill Frisell and calypso-inspired steel drum player Andy Narrell. Also more great voices from South Africa – this time from Lorraine Klassen’s Juno Award-winning Tribute to Miriam Makeba, plus a Juno nominee for this year – Kobo Town, and some Americana from Italian guitarist Beppe Gambetta.
Wednesday March 19
Global Village celebrates the letter A – with music from Italy’s Enzo Avitable; Mauritanian singer Dimi Mint Abba; Herb Alpert from an album he did in the ‘70s with South African great Hugh Masekela; the Amanke Dionti album with Senegalese kora player Ablaye Cissoko and German trumpeter Volker Goetze; and the Arabadub album from The Spy from Cairo.
Thursday March 20
Global Village joins in with Strange Currency and Night Train to greet the arrival of spring with some songs of the season. Plus more great voices of South Africa, the Global Village March feature – this time from Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Hugh Masekela; and birthday salutes to dubmaster Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Alphonso Martin of the British reggae band, Steel Pulse.

It’s a dance party this time in the Global Village with music from Nigeria’s William Onyeabor, Latin percussion great Mongo Santamaria, Canada’s worldbeat SoulJazz Orchestra, soca star Arrow, and Latin funk pioneers, Mandrill.
