Members of the legal community are expected to receive a proclamation on Tuesday during the Wichita City Council meeting. The Wichita Bar Association is celebrating 100 years of existence.
The Wichita Bar Association currently has more than 1,300 members consisting of judges and lawyers practicing in the Wichita area and throughout Kansas. President Holly Dyer says the organization takes their duty to serve the public very seriously.
"We are here to promote justice, to promote an understanding of the law and an appreciation of the law because it impacts our lives every day," Dyer says. "The more we can do that and get out in the community and educate folks about what we do and how we do it and how the law impacts them, the better it is for the community and the better it is for us in representing them."
Dyer says the bar association is especially proud of their work with young people, including summer internships and the Grow Your Own Lawyer program that promotes diversity. She says hundreds of lawyers will be going into classrooms in the Wichita area on Constitution Day this Thursday to talk about practicing law.
The Wichita Bar Association celebration continues with Judges' Day activities on September 24. The day includes tournaments and other activities, starting with bike race to the Sedgwick County Courthouse and ending with a barbecue at Botanica.
