Members of the Wichita Public School Board approved a resolution opposing Substitute House Bill 2292 Monday night.

The bill in question would repeal the national Common Core standards for Kansas schools and require school districts to develop new standards for reading, math and other subjects. The plan is to send the resolution to the state Board of Education and Gov. Sam Brownback.

Board members said their resolution isn't about opinions on common core, but rather is a stance that the proposed bill hurts the districts ability to pick curriculum for students.

Board member Lynn Rogers says he thinks the Legislature is overreaching its bounds in suggesting the current standards be pulled.

“To throw it out, the baby out with the bathwater, and to start over again, we have nothing to teach," he said.

Critics have said the bill could negatively affect Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate in the state because such courses are modeled on national or international contexts. Lawmakers have argued that the bill is simply an attempt to bring curriculum in Kansas schools under the direction of Kansans.
