Wichita State University is offering financial aid for some new freshmen from Sedgwick County.
The newly established Sedgwick County Access Grant will be available for the 2017-18 academic year. High school seniors with permanent residence in the county can apply for the need-based grant.
WSU has been trying to boost enrollment by offering different tuition assistance programs, including reduced out-of-state tuition to students from along the I-35 corridor. At a budget meeting earlier this month, President John Bardo said enrollment is one way the school can help fix its budget woes as it plans for an uncertain financial future.
“We can have some impact on enrollment. And we can have impact on grants and contracts. And those are two areas internally that by us doing better, we can have impact," he said.
The grant amounts range from $250 to $4,000 and can be renewed. Students must be admitted to WSU and have filled out their Free Application for Federal student Aid, or FAFSA, by Dec. 1 to be considered.
