World AIDS Day, Birthday Salutes To Jaco Pastorius, Wynton Kelly, Jim Hall & Cassandra Wilson

Monday 12.1.14

Night Train marks World AIDS Day with music from the Red Hot benefit releases and a benefit album from pianist Fred Hersch. Also a birthday salute to influential bassist Jaco Pastorius with music he did as a solo artist, and Weather Report and Joni Mitchell; Chick Corea’s Latin Grammy winning album The Vigil; and new releases from tuba master Bob Stewart, Hungarian saxophonist Viktor Toth, pianist & vocalist Andy Bey, and the duo of Kenny Barron and Dave Holland.

Tuesday 12.2.14

Night Train celebrates the birthday of pianist Wynton Kelly including music he did as a leader, his classic performance with Miles Davis on Kind of Blue, and as a sideman with Dinah Washington, Wes Montgomery, J.J. Johnson and John Coltrane. Plus new music from guitarists Mark Elf and Oliver Gannon, Mike Longo’s tribute to Oscar Peterson, legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb reunited with The Original Mob,  and a second release from Ritmos Unidos.

Wednesday 12.3.14

Good vibes tonight on the Night Train – with music from vibes men Bobby Hutcherson, Mike Freeman, Joe Locke, Milt Jackson and Gary Burton.  Also on board - soul jazz organist Dr. Lonnie Smith; Carol Saboya with a tribute to Brazil’s Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento; Bela Fleck with the Marcus Roberts Trio; pianist Jessica Williams; a classic from Joe Henderson; and some ‘Secret Agent Men’.

Thursday 12.4.14

Night Train marks birthdays of pianist Andy LaVerne, singer Cassandra Wilson (solo and with violinist Regina Carter & pianist Jacky Terrasson), and guitarist Jim Hall (as a leader, as part of the Jimmy Giuffre 3, with Ron Carter and Paul Desmond, and from the new live album with Charlie Haden. Plus new music from Joe Sample, Ali Jackson, Ranee Lee, Bob Mamet, and the Afro Bop Alliance.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
