World AIDS Day, New Month/New Music Day, And Birthdays Of Nino Rota, Kate Rusby & Anna McGarrigle

Monday, December 1

Special: Global Village marks World Aids Day in a special show devoted to the world music side of the “Red Hot” releases, a series of some 16 recordings in various styles to benefit the Red Hot Organization.  Since it began in 1989, the Red Hot series has involved some 400 international artists and raised over $10 million dollars for AIDS education and prevention programs around the world.

Tuesday, December 2

Global Village highlights some world folk rock from Newfoundland’s Great Big Sea, banjoist Jayme Stone and Linda Thompson along with the modern ‘exotica’ of Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica and TriBeCaStan.

Wednesday, December 3

Global Village celebrates the birthday of acclaimed Italian composer Nino Rota with his music performed by the Club Foot Orchestra, Sex Mob, and an Italian Banda ensemble. Plus new music from Garifuna artist Aurelio and The Sound of Siam Volume Two compilation.

Thursday, December 4

Some contemporary folk sounds this time in the Global Village with birthday celebrations for U.K. folk star Kate Rusby and Canada’s acclaimed Anna McGarrigle – plus Canadian Acadian sounds from Vishten, and new music from guitarist Djessou Mory Kante, the RealWorld25 compilation and Afrobeat legend Tony Allen.

Friday, December 5

New Month/New Music Special: – On the first Friday of each month, Global Village teams up with Strange Currency and Crossroads to feature the best new releases. Highlights in world music this time include:

New holiday titles – including the light-hearted exotica of TriBeCaStan, Joshua Messick’s Hammered Dulcimer Christmas, reggae holiday sounds from Super Hi-fi, and the inimitable Hollywood Tuba 12.

Plus the debut release of French Afrobeat group Afro Social Club; Volume Two in the Afrosound of Columbia series; a new compilation of ‘60s Spanish garage band music; lively music from the Basque group Korrentzi; and reissues of '60s Spanish garage band music, a rare instrumental set from ‘70s Ethiopia and a mid-‘70s project from Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander with guitarist Ernest Ranglin.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
