Global Village throws an Afrobeat party with music from August featured artist Tony Allen as part of Fela’s band and recording under his own name with Fela’s Africa 70 band and Fela as producer. Plus Afrobeat sounds from two U.S. – based Afrobeat bands – The Funk Ark and Antibalas – and an Afrobeat/Gnawa fusion from the Fangnawa Experience release.
Tuesday, August 30
Global Village highlights a variety of global guitarists – including Santana, English folk great John Renbourn, African-fusion player Leni Stern, and Latin Grammy-winning flamenco guitarist Tomatito with the legendary Paco de Lucia.
Wednesday, August 31
Global Village celebrates Independence Day of Trinidad and Tobago. The twin island nation has a rich musical culture, famed for its calypso, soca (a modernized form of calypso) and steel drum music. Some great performers and recordings, along with some different approaches to the sounds of the country will be featured in this Independence Day special.
Thursday, September 1
Global Village explores the meeting of accordions and African music, with Nigerian accordion pioneer I.K. Dairo, the meeting of Congolese rhumba star Papa Noel and French accordionist Viviane A, and Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem’s trio which features the instrument.
