World Saxophones, Buckwheat Zydeco’s Birthday And More In The Global Village

Monday November 10

Highlights in this visit to the Global Village include a classic from Toots & the Maytals, modern Chilean cumbia group Chico Trujillo, Italian neo-folk ensemble Newpoli, Taj Mahal with the Culture Musical Club of Zanzibar, and for the November saxophone feature Femi Kuti, the son of Afrobeat legend, Fela.

Tuesday November 11

Global Village celebrates birthdays of AACM percussionist Kahil El Zabar, Finnish oud player Jussi Reijonen, and Andy Partridge of XTC. Plus more saxophone sounds for the November feature, including music from the Norwegian/Zimbabwean group Monoswezi and Pharoah Sanders as a special guest with the Ritual Trio.

Wednesday November 12

Global Village highlights music from some Juno Award winners (the ‘Canadian grammys’) this time – including Latin jazz saxophonist Jane Bunnett, Balkan guitarist Lubo Alexandrov, South African-born singer Lorraine Klaasen, and Indo-Canadian singer Kiran Ahluwalia. Plus more music for the November saxophone feature, including Arabic jazz group, Nashaz, and Chris McGregor’s Castle Lager Big Band doing a song from legendary South African saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi.

Thursday November 13

Global Village remembers acclaimed Crescent City drummer Idris Muhammad on his birthday, with music he did with Jamaican saxophonist Dean Fraser, the Essence All Stars, the Hawketts, Gene Ammons, Pharoah Sanders, and under his own name. Plus more world saxophone for the November feature and new music from the Far Out Brazilian Bass compilation and the Finding Fela soundtrack.

Friday November 14

Global Village celebrates the birthday of zydeco star Buckwheat Zydeco and highlights a variety of saxophone players from around the world for the November feature – including Yuri Yunakov and Boris Kovac from the Balkans, Getatchew Mekurya from Ethiopia, and Skatalite cofounder Tommy McCook from Jamaica. Also new music from Banda Magda, the Bombay Royale, and Oumar Konate

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
