World Saxophones & A Salute To An Ethiopian Sax Legend, St. Patrick’s Day & Many Birthdays

Monday, March 13

Global Village highlights world saxophones, including music from Tommy McCook, one of the founding members of Jamaica’s pioneering ska band, the Skatalites; Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnett with the Cuban group, Maqueque; Norwegian world-jazz saxophonist Karl Seglem; flamenco sax from Jorge Pardo; and Senegalese saxophonist Dexter Johnson.

Tuesday, March 14

Global Village celebrates the birthday Exotica pioneer Les Baxter and one of the pioneers of Ethiojazz, Getatchew Mekurya. Plus the latest release in the groundbreaking Ethiopiques series and from Benin’s famous Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, and a little celebration of Pi Day with the help of mathematician Tom Lehrer.

Wednesday, March 15

World music projects from Ry Cooder, along with selections from early music vocalist Montserrat Figueras and Japanese world-prog rock artist Stomu Yamashta, all born on this date.  And something ancient Roman for the Ides of March.
 

Thursday, March 16

Global Village pays tribute to one of the greats of Latin jazz flute, Dave Valentin, who passed away last week. We’ll hear music from throughout his career, including early work on the GRP label and with Manny Oquendo’s Libre, as well as some of his many collaborations, including with McCoy Tyner, Conrad Herwig’s Latin Side projects, Pucho & His latin Soul Brothers, and on the Grammy-winning album, The Gathering, with the Caribbean Jazz Project.

Friday, March 17

Global Village celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with a wide array of Irish sounds, from traditional to contemporary, along with classic recordings and more recent releases. Among the artists featured: Van Morrison, Lunasa, Kila, the Chieftains, Afro Celt Sound System and Altan.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
