Global Village celebrates the birthday of singer Neville Staple of the Specials, continues with more music from April featured artists Fanfare Ciocarlia – this time with music from their new 20th anniversary set, Onwards to Mars! – and highlights new music from Brazil’s Sociedade Recreativa, a Colombian roots project from Sidestepper, the One-Drop Anthems compilation, and a 50th anniversary release from one of the great groups of the Latin American New Song movement: Chile’s Inti-Illimani.

Global Village celebrates the birthday of the legendary Herbie Hancock with his world music side, including music from the globe-spanning Imagine Project, guest appearances with African artists Manu Dibango (of “Soul Makossa” fame) and Foday Musa Suso, and covers of his songs from Mongo Santamaria, Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers and the Jazz Jamaica All Stars.

Global Village continues with more music from April featured artists, the Romanian brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia – and highlights some funky and soulful sounds in birthday salutes to Memphis soul legend Al Green, Lowell George of Little Feat, famed New Orleans producer Cosimo Matassa, and saxophonist John Ellis. Also music from famed Cuban pianist Frank Emilio for his birthday, new music from Senegal’s Baaba Maal and the Augustus Pablo Original Rockers reissue.

Global Village heads to Norway for music from two magnificent saxophonists who combine traditional and jazz influences – the pioneering Jan Garbarek and inventive contemporary player Karl Seglem. Also music from the Sweet Sunny North set from David Lindley and Henry Kaiser with over 60 Norwegian musicians, and “Norwegian Wood” from Herbie Hancock. Plus Jamaican sounds from African saxophonist Manu Dibango and roots reggae group Arise Roots.

Latin soul and boogaloo takes center stage this time in the Global Village with classics from Mongo Santamaria and Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers; rarities, including music from the Rough Guide to Latin Rare Groove, Volume 2; and Latin soul versions of songs from James Brown and the Temptations..
