It’s international reggae this time in the Global Village – with reggae sounds from Nigeria, Ghana, Poland, Russia, and other far flung places where Jamaican music has been an inspiration. Among the artists and bands featured: Ersatz Musika, Rocky Dawuni, Rebel Tumbao, Jahcoustix, Hollie Cook and Nina Simone.
Tuesday, August 11
Global Village journeys along the ancient Silk Road trade route – with stops, traditional and contemporary, along with way in Pakistan, India, Turkmenistan, Somalia, Syria, and China. Artists featured include Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan, the Guo Brothers, Waaberi, Fareed Haque, Shanren, and the Kronos Quartet.
Wednesday, August 12
Global Village celebrates the birthday of legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen in a program devoted to his music – from the early highlife band, KoolaLobitos, and the original Afrobeat ensembles with Fela, to solo albums and guest appearances from throughout his career – including music from the documentary, Finding Fela, and a collaboration with one of the rising stars of contemporary African music, SiaTolno.
Thursday, August 13
Global Village highlights African musicians this time - including soukous pioneer Papa Wemba, the Lion of Zimbabwe – Thomas Mapfumo, Senegal’s Pape and Cheikh, the Tuareg group Toumast, and Ugandan exile Geoffrey Oryema. Plus detours to Australia for the Bollywood-rock group the Bombay Royale, and to the U.K. for the reunited reggae band Black Slate.
Friday, August 14
Global Village marks the birthdays of one of the great voices of English folk rock – Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span fame – and roots reggae innovator Yabby You. There’s also more music from August featured artist Jordi Savall, and new music from Slightly Stoopid and The West African Blues Project.
