Wrapping Up Carla Bley, Kicking Off Chick Corea & Showcasing New Organ Releases

Monday 5.30.16

Tonight on the Night Train – remembering clarinet and big band legend Benny Goodman, including a special in hour two that looks at not only his music, but the major impact he had on popular culture. It’s also the birthday of guitarist Randy Napoleon and there’s music from both his new album and from his work as part of the band on Freddy Cole’s new release. Also more from May featured artist Carla Bley (from the I Hate to Sing album) and new music from Cyrille Aimee, Danny Green and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra from their previously unreleased first dates at the Village Vanguard.

Tuesday, 5.31.16

It’s the final night with May featured artist with Carla Bley, and in hour two of the show Night Train offers a special finale with a rarely heard Piano Jazz show featuring both Bley and long-time partner Steve Swallow. Night Train also marks birthdays of saxophonists Greg Abate and Red Holloway, prolific bassist Christian McBride, and legendary drummer Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath, and features new music from Curtis Robinson’s jazz tribute to Motown and from guitarist Russell Malone.

Wednesday 6.1.16

Night Train kicks of the June feature celebrating Chick Corea’s 75th birthday with music he did with Miles Davis and Cal Tjader, and from his own album, Change, with his Origin lineup, and from Crystal Silence, the first of several albums duets with Gary Burton. Plus birthdays of pianist and composer Julian Shore and vocalist Yolande Bavan, and new music from Brazilian pianist and composer Antonio Adolfo, Cuban pianist and composer Axel Tosca, the Yellowjackets, and veteran saxophonist Benny Golson.

Thursday 6.2.16

Night Train highlights the contemporary jazz organ tonight – with modern approaches to the classic soul jazz sound to adventurous new approaches to the organ in jazz – including new albums from Larry Young (previously unreleased music recorded In Paris in the mid-60s), the Organik Vibe Trio, Ed Cherry (with organist Kyle Koehler), Will Bernard (with organist Brian Charette) and Dave Anderson (with organist Pat Bianchi). Plus more for the June Chick Corea feature, this time with music from Return to Forever and from the Native Sense duet album with Gary Burton.
