Wrapping Up March Lloyd/Terry– Starting Billie Holiday Centennial Celebration + Guitar Birthdays

Monday March 30

Night Train marks birthdays of two talented guitarists – Dave Stryker (who has a new album out in tribute to Stanley Turrentine) and Spain’s Ximo Tebar. Plus music from acclaimed saxophonist Steve Wilson (who has a regional performance coming up this week) and from March featured artists Clark Terry and Charles Lloyd – including a special in hour two of the show exploring the music of Lloyd’s ‘60s quartets.

Tuesday March 31

Night Train celebrates NEA Jazz Masters tonight  – including both March featured artists - Clark Terry and Charles Lloyd, one of the first NEA honorees - Dizzy Gillespie, and also Abbey Lincoln, Billy Higgins, Roy Haynes, Keith Jarrett, Mose Allison, Art Blakey, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, and more.

Wednesday April 1

Tonight on the Night Train – some fusion sounds from the Mads Tolling Quartet, Return to Forever, and the Paolo Fresu Devil Quartet. Plus pianists Thelonious Monk, Fred Hersch, Eric Reed, and Joanne Brackeen, and singers Stacey Kent, Karrin Allyson, Tessa Souter, and Abbey Lincoln.

Thursday April 2

Night Train celebrates the centennial birthday of Billie Holiday throughout April, including music tonight from a tribute to Billie by Juno Award winning singer Molly Johnson. Plus a birthday celebration for guitar whiz Larry Coryell, including music from his new album, a rarity from the ‘70s with Steve Khan, and a special in hour two that explores a variety of Coryell connections.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
