Youth Symposium In Wichita Saturday

A Youth Symposium for middle and high school teens gets underway in Wichita on Saturday. KMUW’s Carla Eckels reports…

The event, in its 7th year in Wichita, is part of a national effort by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, to focus on education and empowering youth. Organizer Conni Mansaw says a variety of topics will be discussed including college preparation and even swimming techniques.

"We have a representative from Wichita Swim Club that will be speaking on water safety preparing the students to get ready for the summer water activities," says Mansaw, "and then we have an individual from Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center that will speak on healthy relationships, teen dating and bullying."

Participants can also join in a light exercise routine and learn about healthy eating. Admission to the Youth Symposium is a children’s book that will be donated to St. Jude’s Hospital.

Carla Eckels is Director of Organizational Culture at KMUW. She produces and hosts the R&B and gospel show Soulsations and brings stories of race and culture to The Range with the monthly segment In the Mix. Carla was inducted into The Kansas African American Museum's Trailblazers Hall of Fame in 2020 for her work in broadcast/journalism.
