Straight No Chaser

Duke Ellington said “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing,” but that isn’t the case so much any more. Since we have been playing a lot of Count Basie, a real master of swing, tonight we pay careful attention to play only things that swing!

The Count Basie Band with the New York Voices will be appearing in Wichita at the Orpheum Theatre on Feburary 16. To aid your enjoyment, we have a special in-studio visit from Lisa Hittle who will discuss what we might expect as well as provide additional information about the band and the music.

Tonight we start to give you a taste of what to expect when the Count Basie band and the New York Voices appear at the Orpheum. Also, we will hear McCoy Tyner, Kenny Burrell and Gil Evans, Bud Powell and Ray Bryant.

Tonight is the last of the flood of Christmas Carols. We will hear from Gene Ammons, Don Patterson and Jimmy Smith. In non-seasonal selections, we hear several things written and performed by Phil Woods.

Tonight we continue the flood of Christmas music. We hear from The Colbys, Gerry Mulligan and Dave Brubeck, The Tri-fi Trio, Gene Ammons and Jimmy Smith.

Tonight begins the annual tradition of jazz versions of holiday songs. We hear some from Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Smith, Jimmie McGriff, Wynton Marsalis and Bobby Timmons.

We break the shrink-wrap bonds on a new CD by Walter White (no relation to the TV drama) entitled Breaking Good. Then we follow with Claire Daly, Diana Krall, Fred Hersch, and the South Florida Jazz Orchestra.

Tonight we again dedicate the entire show to the fine old tradition of “stretching out” where musicians take all the time necessary to completely express all their feelings about a particular set of chord changes. The results are very long performances. We hear the results from Wes Montgomery, Phil Woods, Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith and more.
