KMUW’s Frank Dudgeon retires Friday after more than 40 years as a member of the professional radio community. Jedd Beaudoin recently sat down with Dudgeon to talk about his career. And they started at the beginning.
“I was actually born in Arkansas,” he says, “that was because my dad was a country singer and he was on the road. This is back when country music sounded like folk, it was all acoustic. And my mother was with him at the time and I always feel that if you’re born you should be near your mother."
Tom Hayden, internationally known human rights and peace activist, former California state legislator, and Freedom Rider will speak Friday at the Peace & Social Justice Center's 20th anniversary dinner.
Hayden will share his long-time experience in peace, justice and environment movements. He spent years on the forefront of the anti-Vietnam War movement and is against the war in Afghanistan. He says in the '60s, President Lyndon Johnson said that the United States could afford guns and butter, meaning the Vietnam War and domestic programs.
Around 50 protesters, mostly young people, gathered outside Secretary of State Kris Kobach's office Tuesday, calling on him to resign. Among other things, the protesters said Kobach spends too much time on immigration issues.
The Wichita City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve water and sewer rate increases effective next year.
On January 1, Wichita's residential customers will see their monthly bills increase $1.19 to $7.74 depending on how much water they use. Commercial and industrial customers will see a rate hike of around 7 percent.
Alan King, Director of Public Works and Utilities says the water rates will insure a level of funding for proper renewal and replacement of aging water mains.
Thursday marks the start of the cold weather rule period in Kansas, restricting utility cutoffs for nonpayment of bills.
The rule is in effect from November 1 to March 31. It prohibits shutoffs of residential electricity or natural gas service when temperatures are expected to be at or below 35 degrees over the following 24 hours.
Utilities also must contact a customer 24 hours before a disconnection, and offer a 12-month payment plan for the customer to maintain or re-establish service.

The 29-year old auctioneer conducts a recent charity auction at Wichita’s Botanica Gardens.
Megan will compete Friday in the 2012 International Auctioneer Championship in Spokane, Washington. It’s not her first time though, she was named first runner up in the final round of vigorous competition last year.
“Well, it’s intense. I will say that,” says McCurdy.
