In the past six months, Harvey and Butler counties were the victims of cyberattacks that shut down their computer networks for a short time.

The incidents are a reminder that network security and backup systems are critically important for government agencies, businesses and organizations of all sizes.

Friends University in Wichita is offering a path for students in Butler Community College’s cybersecurity program to continue their education.

Traditionally, most university Spanish degrees have focused on literature and culture. One college in Wichita has changed its Spanish language program to meet a growing demand for interpreters and translators.

When Jerry Smartt was studying for her four Spanish degrees, the focus was on literature and culture.

"I have an entire wall in my office that is nothing but my best friends, which are my books," she says.

Universities in Wichita have produced Fulbright Scholars in the past, including Wichita State University President John Bardo. This year, Friends University has produced two, including one historian who's been a Fulbright scholar three times. She leaves on Wednesday to teach at a university in Bosnia.

The prestigious Fulbright Program, operated by the U.S. Department of State, helps to increase understanding between Americans and people in other countries. The program offers grants to study, teach and conduct research in 190 countries.

Twenty-First Century Projects is a new collaboration between Wichita musicians and the Friends University Ballet. The project brings together rock band Spirit of the Stairs, composer Von Hansen and a string quartet led by cellist Susan Mayo. According to Mayo, it was Friends University Ballet Director Stan Rogers who conceived this new project.

Friends University in Wichita is establishing its first fully funded endowed chair. The appointment will come in the Fine Arts Division as part of a $1.2 million gift from an alumna.

Meredith Gail Buchanan graduated from Friends University in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She and her husband, Tim, want to enhance the educational experience at Friends, so they’ve committed more than $1 million to the fine arts program to establish the Tim and Gail Buchanan Chair in Fine Arts.

Friends University in Wichita achieved a milestone this year when it hired its new president.

Friends University in Wichita has partnered with four area community colleges to offer on-site degree programs.

The university announced Wednesday it will work with students attending Hutchinson Community College, Dodge City Community College, Garden City Community College and Seward County Community College in Liberal.

Area high school, middle school, and junior college jazz bands and jazz vocal ensembles will sharpen their skills this weekend under the direction of musical masters at Friends University.  The 21st Annual Jazz Festival is a two-day event on the Friends University campus in Wichita. An invitational vocal concert will cap off Friday's events and the festival will culminate with the Headliner Concert Saturday night. (The festival's daytime events are no-cost and welcome observers.)
