The annual “F as in Fat” report says 29.9 per cent of adults in Kansas are obese. That’s barely changed from last year.

Americans Living Longer, But Quality Of Life In Jeopardy

The 2012 edition of America's Health Rankings says medical advances are helping people live longer, but preventable illnesses and unhealthy behaviors are undermining the quality of that longer lifespan.

The big threats, according to the report from United Health Foundation, are obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and inactive lifestyles. Kansas ranks right in the middle of the 50 states, at 24th overall. However, Kansas has one of the highest obesity rates in the U.S., with more than 630,000 obese adults.

Summit Focused On Strategies To Combat Obesity

More than 60 percent of Kansans are classified as overweight or obese, and summit in Topeka Thursday was aimed at finding ways to tackle that problem.

Governor Sam Brownback told the gathering about the steps he’s had to take to control his weight - specifically, watching his eating.

Brownback has a simple message for people fighting obesity: don’t give up.

“Most of America struggles with weight at one time or another,” he said. “This is not an unusual situation that you are in or that anybody else is in. We all have, just don’t give up.”

Recent reports and actions by state and national government indicate doctors, insurers and employers will play a large role in combating the nation’s obesity epidemic.

At a routine doctor visit you usually know what to expect. The doctor or nurse will take your height, your blood pressure, listen to your heart, weigh you - and increasingly calculate your BMI.

Body Mass Index, the standard, yet not always accurate, measurement of body fat, can let a person know if they are overweight or obese.
