The Libertarian Party in Kansas is gearing up for their convention next week in Wichita to select a candidate to run in the special 4th Congressional District election. The seat was vacated recently after Republican Mike Pompeo was confirmed as the new CIA director of the CIA.

The convention will take place Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Wichita Public Library's Alford Branch, and will be open to any registered Libertarian in the 4th District.

Kansas Republicans are meeting Feb. 9 and Democrats are convening two days later to pick their nominees for the congressional seat formerly held by CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

The special GOP convention in the 4th Congressional District will be in Wichita at Friends University and starts at 7 p.m.

Democrats plan to meet at 1 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Sedgwick County Courthouse in Wichita.

In both parties, local activists make the choice.

At least two more congressional hopefuls are in the race for Kansas’ 4th District seat. Democratic former State Treasurer Dennis McKinney and current state treasurer Ron Estes formally began their campaigns Wednesday for their parties’ nominations to get on the ballot.

In his campaign announcement, Republican Ron Estes emphasized his grassroots political experience and conservative principles.

Voters in the 4th Congressional District in south-central Kansas will choose a new member of Congress on April 11.

Republican Mike Pompeo officially stepped down Monday after he was confirmed to become the director of the CIA. Gov. Sam Brownback signed an order Tuesday setting the date for the election.

Brownback says he chose the earliest Tuesday available under state law because he wants the seat filled quickly.

If U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo of Kansas is confirmed as the next CIA director, several steps will have to play out to name his successor.

Gov. Sam Brownback would have five days to call for a special election to replace the Republican congressman. That election would have to be held 75 to 90 days after he proclamation is issued. That's a change from previous state law, which required special elections to be held within 60 days.

Wichita City Councilman Pete Meitzner is the most recent contender for the 4th Congressional District seat, a position currently held by Mike Pompeo, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to head the CIA.

Meitzner, a Republican, has served on the city council since 2011 and recently started his second four-year term. He says that while on the council he's worked to apply business practices to Wichita's government.

"I'd like to follow the lead, along with the president, about putting some more business applications in the federal government," Meitzner said.

Kansas lawmakers are moving fast on revisions to the process for filling a Congressional vacancy, anticipating there will be a vacancy very soon. Hearings to confirm Congressman Mike Pompeo as CIA director started on Thursday.

The Kansas House has approved a bill to extend by a month the timeline for a special election to be held after being called by the governor. That would put the state in compliance with federal rules allowing members of the military to vote by absentee ballot.

Republican Rep. Keith Esau says the revisions are sorely needed.
