Wichita State University received an initial approval to build its first parking garage on the main campus.

The Kansas Board of Regents approved the proposal at its meeting on Wednesday.

WSU wants to build a multi-level parking garage south of the Rhatigan Student Center that could hold up to 400 or more vehicles. It is part of its plan to increase enrollment at the university and to encourage a more live-on campus.

Faculty, staff, students and visitors have complained that there is a lack of adequate parking near the central part of campus.

The Wheatshocker Apartments have seen wave after wave of students since 1965. On Monday, a wrecking ball chipped away section after section. Big chunks collapsed in clouds of dust and flying concrete.

A group of students at Wichita State University are providing a helping hand to refugees who have come here to escape war, poverty or natural disasters in their home countries.

KMUW’s Deborah Shaar has the story.

The students created a group called "Reaching Out 2 Refugees" to offer tangible support, such as clothing, furniture or toiletries, to the refugees that have resettled in the Wichita area.

WSU senior, Matt Brubaker says one lesson he’s learned is that the community has a lot of needs that go unseen.
