After Nearly 50 Years, WSU's Wheatshocker Apartments Fall

Final demolition of Wichita State University’s Wheatshocker Apartments started Monday morning. As KMUW’s Sean Sandefur reports, the six-story building along 17th street has housed students for decades.

    

The Wheatshocker Apartments have seen wave after wave of students since 1965. On Monday, a wrecking ball chipped away section after section. Big chunks collapsed in clouds of dust and flying concrete.

New WSU Group Helping Refugees In Wichita

A group of students at Wichita State University are providing a helping hand to refugees who have come here to escape war, poverty or natural disasters in their home countries.

KMUW’s Deborah Shaar has the story.

The students created a group called "Reaching Out 2 Refugees" to offer tangible support, such as clothing, furniture or toiletries, to the refugees that have resettled in the Wichita area.

WSU senior, Matt Brubaker says one lesson he’s learned is that the community has a lot of needs that go unseen.

Opera Stars Samuel Ramey and Alan Held Join WSU Music Faculty

Opera stars Sam Ramey and Alan Held will join the WSU faculty in fall 2014.

Voice and opera students at WSU will have the opportunity to study with two international opera stars beginning this fall.

Samuel Ramey, a renowned and celebrated opera talent and the most recorded bass in history, and Alan Held, an international opera star and one of the leading bass-baritone singing actors today, will join Wichita State's music faculty.

As announced in a press release on Tuesday, Ramey will have a daily presence on campus throughout the year.

1,100 Expected To Turn Out For Kansas Science Olympiad

The Kansas Science Olympiad takes place in Wichita Saturday. Students from 30 middle and high schools across the state will compete in events like bridge building, thermodynamics and robotics. 

Wichita State University has hosted the Olympiad for 26 years.

Bardo Formally Inaugurated As President Of WSU

After more than three months on the job, Dr. John Bardo was formally inaugurated Friday as the 13th president of Wichita State University.

Bardo gave his inaugural address to a crowd of faculty, staff, students, state officials and community members– including former WSU President Don Beggs and Gov. Sam Brownback.

He said it is more clear to him than ever that the fortunes of Wichita State and those of the greater Wichita area are linked.

On July 1, John Bardo became the 13th president of Wichita State University. 

He previously served as the chancellor of West Carolina University for 16 years.

WSU Holds Farewell Reception For The Beggs

A farewell reception for Wichita State University President and First Lady, Don and Shirley Beggs was held Thursday on campus.

A room in Koch Arena was filled with well-wishers, faculty and staff wearing black and gold, the Wu Shock, cheerleaders, all wanting to express their appreciation for the Beggs.

For 13 and a half years, the couple tirelessly supported WSU.

Bobby Gandu was a student during their tenure and is now WSU’s Director of Admissions. He says the Beggs are going out with style, grace and a lot of respect and pride for the institution.
