Monday November 3
Global Village heads to the Balkans for music from early music master Jordi Savall’s Balkan Spirit, the Brooklyn-based Raya Brass Band, and one of the premier Balkan brass bands on the scene today – the Boban and Marko Markovic Orchestra. Plus stops in between to Lisbon, the Caribbean, Celtic Spain, and a “Saturday Night on Saturn” date with exotica legend Les Baxter.
Tuesday November 4
Global Village highlights world saxophones - the November feature to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolphe Sax, who invented the instrument. Among the artists featured this time are Tommy McCook, one of the founding members of Jamaica’s acclaimed ska band the Skatalites; Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnett with her new Cuban group, Maqueque; Norwegian world-jazz saxophonist Karl Seglem, and Senegal’s Dexter Johnson.
Wednesday November 5
This is the first time in many years that Cambodia is celebrating the traditional Water Festival, and Global Village marks the occasion with music from that country, including a classic from the recent Rough Guide to Psychedelic Cambodia, and contemporary bands Dengue Fever and Cambodian Space Project. Plus music from Fela for the November saxophone feature, and new music from Thailand’s Khun Narin Electric Phin Band, and Brooklyn Afrobeat group Zongo Junction.
Thursday November 6
Special: Global Village marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolphe Sax, the man who invented the saxophone, with a program devoted to saxophone music and musicians from around the world – including Africa’s Manu Dibango and Seun Kuti, the Skatalites and Dean Fraser from Jamaica, Balkan artists Fanfare Ciocarlia and Boris Kovac and a classic bossa from Stan Getz.
Friday November 7
New Month/New Music Feature: On the first Friday of each month, Global Village teams up with Strange Currency and Crossroads to feature the best new releases. Highlights in world music this time include:
The second album from the Barcelona-based Alma Afrobeat Ensemble
Master conguero Candido
A salute to Africa from the Afro-Brazilian/Appalachian band, Matuto
Roots reggae from the West Coast on a second album from Arise Roots
And several guitar albums – from Alex Skolnick, Djessou Mory Kante, and Strunz & Farah
