Local activist and educator Claudia Amaro says people in Wichita's Latino community have concerns with the Trump administration being in power next year.
After last week's presidential election, Amaro says she is hearing from the community. She says kids have talked about being bullied at schools, parents are wondering whether to rethink buying a home here, and that there's more talk about a wall being built along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The wall is something that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach--nowa member of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team--endorses.
Amaro says building the wall is going to take time.
“We are more worried about what's gonna happen immediately, like, for example, our DREAMers. There was DACA , the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival," she says. "It’s an executive action, so that’s something that he can cancel as soon as he starts being president from day one."
Whether Trump will rescind President Obama's executive order remains undecided. Amaro says a workshop is being organized for Latinos to know their rights. The meeting, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Evergreen Park, will be open to the public.
