Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency tonight to celebrate the birthday of Bob Marley. Hour one of the show features jazz versions of Marley songs from Charlie Hunter, Monty Alexander, Rebel Tumbao and Richard Bona with Michael Brecker, while hour two is devoted to a special about Marley’s life and music. Plus music from February featured artist Al DiMeola and from Benny Golson, who is in town Friday for a Master Class at WSU that is free and open to the public. (Duerkson C104, 11 a.m.)

Night Train marks the birthday of soul jazz saxophonist King Curtis and continues with more music from February featured artist Al DiMeola (this time with music from later releases – Orange and Blue and World Sinfonia). Plus lots of music from saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader and NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson. He will be in town Friday morning on the WSU Campus (Duerkson C104, at 11am) for a master class that is free and open to the public.

Tribute albums are in the spotlight tonight on the Night Train – including George Cable’s celebration of his Icons and Influences, Cedar Walton paying tribute to his Roots, Eric Alexander’s salute to Chicago jazz on his album Chicago Fire, Carmen McRae’s remembrance of Sarah Vaughan, Freddy Cole’s album in honor of Billy Eckstine, Craig Handy celebrating both Jimmy Smith and the music of New Orleans, and Jacques Schwarz-Bart saluting the music of Haiti.

Night Train highlights singers tonight, both contemporary and legendary – including Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Shirley Horn, Kurt Elling, Catherine Russell, Mose Allison, and Nat King Cole. Plus music from February featured artist Al DiMeola’s Casino album, and new music from Richie Cole, Steve Slagle, Kenny Burrell and the Planet D Nonet.
