Aretha Franklin & Rufus Thomas + Concert Previews

March 24/26

Crossroads continues with more music from March featured artists Aretha Franklin and Rufus Thomas. Franklin’s 75th birthday is March 25 and Rufus Thomas’s centennial birthday is March 26th. This time some classic tracks from Aretha, along with the first recording Thomas did for the Stax label, an early hit with his daughter Carla Thomas. Thomas was a big part of the Stax story and in hour two of the show, we present a House of Blues special about Stax with guest Al Bell, a later co-owner and executive with the label.

There’s also music from artists with concerts in the coming week and the latest from Wee Willie Walker, Bobby Rush, Mississippi Heat, and Vaneese Thomas, the daughter of Rufus Thomas.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
