Global Village takes a quick summer vacation to Italy with the help of neo-folk artists Enzo Avitabile and Elianto, jazz-influenced sounds from Daniela Nardi and Cassandra Wilson, and an import album from Bandadritica that combines music of Italy with sounds of the Balkans.

Tuesday  August 12

SPECIAL: An Afrobeat extravaganza, as Global Village celebrates the birthday of legendary drummer Tony Allen in a program devoted to his music – from the early highlife band, Koola Lobitos, and the original Afrobeat ensembles with Fela, to solo albums and guest appearances from throughout his career – including music from the new documentary, Finding Fela, and a new collaboration with rising African star, Sia Tolno.

Wednesday  August 13

Global Village highlights some meetings of West African kora and jazz– with August featured artist, internationally acclaimed kora player ToumaniDiabate, performing with Herbie Hancock and Dee Dee Bridgewater; also kora player Sekou Kouyate guesting on an album from contemporary Cuban artist Roberto Fonseca; and the Pacific Northwest’s Kora Band.  Plus new music from the Sound of Siam Vol. 2 compilation, the new new-tango group JulienLabro & the Spektral Quartet, and Mali’s AnansyCisse.

Thursday  August 14

Global Village celebrates the birthdays of two fine singers – English folk rock star and founding member of Steeleye Span – Maddy Prior, and flamenco singer (and daughter of flamenco great Enrique Morente) – Estrella Morente.  Plus more from August featured artist Toumani Diabate – from the acclaimed African-flamenco fusion Songhai project and from his first solo album, Kaira. And new music from Hungarian group Sondorgo, Project Trio, and Adnan Joubran.

Friday August 15

Global Village highlights Latin sounds from percussionist Steve Kroon, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval , contemporary cumbia rock group Chico Trujillo, and Brian Andres & the Afro-Cuban Jazz Cartel. Plus the acclaimed African group, Staff Benda Bilili, folk guitar greats John Renbourn and Stefan Grossman, and Brazil meets bluegrass group Nation Beat.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
