Tuesday, October 20

Global Village marks the birthday of critically acclaimed Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem, whose work elegantly combines music of North Africa with Western contemporary classical and jazz influences. We’ll hear music from his 2015 release, Souvenance - his musical meditation on the recent political changes in Tunisia, along with selections from Astrakan Café and The Astounding Eyes of Rita. Plus more music for the October UK Folk (Rock) feature – from Pentangle and Richard & Linda Thompson – and new Mediterranean excursions from adventurous French composer and multi-instrumentalist Titi Robin.

Wednesday, October 21

Global Village celebrates birthdays of the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, and legendary Latin and world jazz pioneer Dizzy Gillespie. Plus more for the October UK Folk (Rock) feature, and new music from the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and Tiempo Libre.

Thursday, October 22

Global Village offers a birthday special with Canadian soprano saxophone and flute player, composer, Juno Award winner, and recipient of the Order of Canada, Jane Bunnett. In a series of groundbreaking recordings, Bunnett worked with some of the most dynamic musicians in Cuba and explored an often unknown variety of styles, from the folkloric to the contemporary, from across that country. Bunnett delves into the history of the music, the artists she found, and the distinctive and inventive music she created with them. The show also features a wide array of selections from her many Cuban projects.

Friday, October 23

New tango and new flamenco styles are featured this time in the Global Village, with music from the Gipsy Kings, Calaita Flamenco Son, and two master accordionists – Astor Piazzolla and Richard Galliano. Plus June Tabor & the Oysterband for the October UK Folk (Rock) feature; a classic from Argentine saxophonist Gato Barbieri; and a modern approach to some older Chinese favorites from the Shanghai Restoration Project.
