Night Train highlights new albums from jazz guitarists Ed Cherry, John Hart, Randy Napoleon, Andy Brown and Peter Bernstein; marks birthdays of guitarist Anthony Wilson and pianist/vocalist Tania Maria; and continues with more music from May featured artist Carla Bley (this time with covers of her compositions from both John McLaughlin and Gary Burton).

Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Jimmy Ponder and drummer Mel Lewis (including music from the newly released debut performances of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra at the Village Vanguard). Plus more music from May featured artist Carla Bley, a classic from Herbie Hancock, and new music from baritone saxophonist Tony Lustig, drummers Joe Chambers and Allison Miller, vocalist Freddy Cole and pianist Kenny Barron.

Night Train celebrates May featured artist Carla Bley’s 80th birthday with a program devoted to her music. In hour one of the show, it’s music from her classic album, I Hate to Sing, and her new album, Andando el Tiempo – plus covers of her songs from John Scofield and Gary Burton, and work she did with bassist Steve Swallow and the Liberation Music Orchestra. Then in hour two, a special program, The Carla Bley Songbook, that delves into the small group recordings of Bley’s early compositions that first attracted the attention of fellow musicians and the jazz audience.

Thursday 5.12.16

Night Train marks birthdays of bassist Gary Peacock and pianist Gerry Wiggins; continues with more music from May featured artist Carla Bley; and highlights the latest releases from vibes player Christian Tamburr, pianist/vocalist Champian Fulton, Willie Nelson with a tribute to Gershwin, the Bill Charlap Trio, and pianist Renee Rosnes.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
