Monday, July 18

Global Village celebrates Nelson Mandela International Day – a special day of commemoration, celebration and public service designated by the United Nations for South African leader Nelson Mandela’s birthday. The show highlights music and artists who created songs in honor of Mandela and the fight against apartheid in South Africa that still resonate today. Among the artists featured: Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Artists United Against Apartheid, Abdullah Ibrahim, Brenda Fassie, and Harry Belafonte.

Tuesday, July 19

This time in the Global Village, it’s Ali Farka Toure: Roots and Branches - music from the legendary Malian guitarist from his classic Talking Timbuktu album with Ry Cooder, as well selections from his cousin Khaira Arby, son Vieux Farka Toure, former band members Afel Bocoum (performing with Bela Fleck) and Samba Toure, and finally (one degree removed), Issa Babayago, whose career was helped along by a former member of Toure’s band.

Wednesday, July 20

Global Village celebrates the birthday today of July featured artist Carlos Santana with music he did as part of the Santana band (including music from the band’s debut and from the new Santana IV album), as a solo artist (from the Havana Moon set), as guest artist (with Nigerian drummer Olatunji, and bluesmen Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker), and more in a program devoted entirely to his music.

Thursday, July 21

Global Village highlights fiddles and flutes– including the ‘fiddles’ of Beausoleil, Jordi Savall, and Violons Barbares, and the flutes of Yusef Lateef, Flook, and a featured flute in the Pacific Mambo Orchestra. Plus music from two Rough Guide compilations – Scottish Music and Arabic Café – and South African legend Hugh Masekela.

Friday, July 22

Global Village continues with more music from July featured artist Carlos Santana (including music from Abraxas and with John McLaughlin) - and celebrates birthdays of guitarist Al DiMeola and Latin jazz saxophonist Mario Rivera (whose credits include work with Latin legend Tito Puente, a major influence on Santana, and a Latin jazz salute to another major influence on Santana, Miles Davis).
