Tonight on the Night Train, some great singers on board– including Diana Krall, Ruth Brown, Kurt Elling, and Abbey Lincoln, plus classics from Art Tatum and Lee Morgan, along with music from vibes players Gary Burton (with Chick Corea) and Erik Charlston (with JazzBrasil), and guitarist Grant Geissman (teamed up with Yellowjackets co-founder Russell Ferrante).

    

Tuesday 6.9.15

Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of June featured artist Les Paul and Night Train celebrates with music from the guitarist, including a piece written by Cole Porter, the acclaimed songwriter who was also born on this date. There’s more music from Porter from both guitarists and from several new releases, and also music from one of the greats of jazz piano, Kenny Barron, who was also born on this date . In hour two of the show, it’s a Les Paul special with rock guitarist Steve Miller (who was Les Paul’s godson) and a member of the Les Paul Foundation, talking about his life, music and enduring influence.

Night Train marks birthdays of bossa nova great Joao Gilberto, bassists Dwayne Burno and Charnett Moffett, and guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg – and there’s more guitar for the June feature, this time from Stanley Jordan,  Peter Leitch, organist Mel Rhyne’s tribute to Wes Montgomery, and new albums from Rez Abbasi, Russell Malone and Pat Martino.

Thursday 6.11.15

Night Train gives the drummers some – two drummers with birthdays today – popular West Coast drummer Shelley Manne, and the ubiquitous Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie. Plus more jazz electric guitar for the June feature, this time from world fusion pioneer Gabor Szabo, one of the most popular and innovative guitarists of his generation, Pat Metheny, and in hour two of the show, another of the specials for the June feature, a live performance from critically acclaimed guitarist Bill Frisell at the Savannah Music Festival.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
