Bob Marley Birthday Special, Roots Reggae Revival & Remembering Can’s Jaki Liebezeit

Monday, February 6

Global Village marks the birthday of reggae legend Bob Marley with music from his classic recordings and a wide range of covers of his songs from such artists as I-Three members Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, Tiken Jah Fakoly (from his recent Racines album), The Gladiators, Bunny Wailer, Rebel Tumbao and The String Cheese Incident.

(Strange Currency and Night Train also feature music from Bob Marley tonight for his birthday.)

Tuesday, February 7

Global Village highlights some UK Folk (Rock) from Richard Thompson, June Tabor, John Renbourn and Karine Polwart. Plus some twists on folk sounds from Sweden, the Balkans, Canada and France.

Wednesday, February 8

Throughout February Global Village is highlighting the new roots reggae revival and in this show music from some of the premier Jamaican artists who have shaped the roots renaissance there, including Protoje, Jah9, Chronixx, Raging Fyah, Kabaka Pyramid, and Jesse Royal. Plus a few more of our favorites from 2016 – the Bollywood Brass Band, Constantinople and Imarhan.

Thursday, February 9

Global Village explores some global harp sounds – including music from Veracruz from Sones de Mexico; acclaimed Venezuelan harpist Hugo Blanco; Alan Stivell – the artist who almost single-handedly revived interest in the Celtic Harp in the ‘70s; Rodrigo Romani – who pioneered the use of the Celtic harp in contemporary Galician folk music; pioneering jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby; and the musical meeting of classical harpist Catrin Finch and kora player Seckou Keita.

Friday, February 10

Global Village pays tribute to pioneering  German drummer Jaki Liebezeit who passed away at the end of January with music he did with Can and with Brian Eno. Plus more music from Bob Marley for the February feature and birthday salutes to Brazilian pianist, composer, arranger and educator Antonio Adolfo and world-fusion trumpeter Paolo Fresu.
