Canada Day, Soul Night, New Month/New Music Time & New July Feature for RealWorld’s 25th

Monday  June 30

Global Village highlights an array of Latin sounds this time around, including Latin psychedelia from Joe Cuba, Latin soul from percussion great Mongo Santamaria, Latin jazz from the Miles Español album in tribute to Miles Davis, Latin ska from the pioneering Skatalites, and some Latin rock from ‘70s Belgian artist Nico Gomez and from Santana.

Tuesday  July 1

CANADA DAY SPECIAL: Global Village celebrates Canada’s national holiday with a show devoted to music from that country, including traditional and popular favorites and a growing number of artists and groups inspired by a wide array of styles from around the world. Among the artists featured in the show –Ensemble Polaris, Dubmatix, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Cockburn, Lorraine Klaasen, the Souljazz Orchestra and Slide to Freedom.

Strange Currency and Night Train will also be celebrating Canada Day tonight.

Wednesday July 2

Some groundbreaking groups and artists in this visit to the Global Village– including the great salsa ensemble, the Fania All Stars; pioneering Finnish folk group Varttina; English folk cult favorite Nick Drake; acclaimed Irish ensemble,  the Chieftains; and the great Senegalese band, Orchestra Baobab.

Thursday  July 3

Global Village highlights soul, doo wop and funk sounds to mark birthdays of Fontella Bass, Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, and David Lynch of the Platters, and to pay tribute to Teenie Hodges, guitarist with the famed Memphis soul ensemble, the Hi Rhythm Section, who passed away recently. Plus new music from Santana, Monty Alexander, and Ziggy Marley.

NEW MONTH/NEW MUSIC:  New releases featured the first Friday of every month on Global Village, Strange Currency and Crossroads.

The Global Village New Month/New Music show features the best of new world music releases. Highlights this time include:

Brooklyn Afrobeat band Zongo Junction

The veteran Cumbia All Stars and contemporary psychedelic cumbia group Sonido Gallo Negro

The return of Santana and of roots reggae bands Third World and Black Slate

Australian Bollywood rock exotica from The Bombay Royale

Welsh pop band 9Bach

And some exciting new neo-folk sounds from the Czech Republic’s Bezobratri

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
