Celebrating A Great American Musicologist, Going Out To Sea And Conducting Some Fruitless Research

Monday, February 1

Buddy Miller is a prolific songwriter, producer and musician whose work includes credits with Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant and numerous albums as a solo artist and with his wife Julie.

His latest release is credited to Buddy Miller and Friends and features guest appearances from Kris Kristofferson, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams and Kacey Musgraves. It’s called Cayamo Sessions At Sea and we’ll hear selections from it on this episode of the show as well as selections from Robert Earl Keen’s 2015 bluegrass recording, Happy Prisoner

Tuesday, February 2

Let Me Get By is the latest release by Tedeschi Trucks Band. Led by the husband and wife team of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, the band blends southern soul and blues with touches of jazz and funk. This latest recording is being hailed as the group’s best to date. We’ll hear selections from it as well as from Tower of Power’s Back To Oakland LP.

Wednesday, February 3

Considered one of the first bands to receive the “shoegaze” label, Lush was formed in London, England in the late 1980s and recorded a series of acclaimed and influential albums between 1989 and 1996. Those records are now collected in a boxed set titled Chorus which also features a range of Lush rarities. We’ll hear selections from that collection as well as music from Blur’s classic Parklife album.

Thursday, February 4

In 1982 John Cale released his solo album Music For a New Society. Now, M:FANS - a rework of the original album with an additional three unreleased bonus tracks. Listen for selections from that recording as well as music from Cale’s former Velvet Underground bandmate Lou Reed. 

Friday, February 5

It’s our New Month, New Music Feature: This time out we’ll spotlight new releases from The I Don’t Cares, which brings together former Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg with singer-songwriter Julianna Hatfield. We’ll hear from their debut, Wild Stab as well as selections from upcoming releases by Emmy The Great and others.

Saturday, February 6

Above The Prairie is the latest release by Americana trio The Pines. We’ll hear selections from that recording as well as selections from former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson. 

Monday, February 8

Root Hog Or Die: 100 Songs, 100 Years: An Alan Lomax Centennial Tribute is a six-LP set that covers 100 songs taken from 50 years of field recordings from folklorist/musicologist Alan Lomax. The collection features performances from American music legends such as Son House, Skip James and Jelly Roll Morton as well as numerous lesser-known acts. We’ll hear a sampling from this collection on this episode of the show as well as music from Carrie Nation and The Speakeasy’s Hatchetations recording.

We team with Global Village and Night Train to celebrate Mardis Gras with selections from Widespread Panic, Sonny Landreth, Sting, the Hot 8 Brass Band and Robbie Roberston. 

Wednesday, February 10

Searching For Sunlight is the latest release from the band Golden Bloom. Listen for music from that recording as well as from Brace The Wave, the 2015 recording by Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr.

Thursday, February 11

Fruitless Research is the latest album by TW Walsh, an acclaimed singer-songwriter perhaps best known for his work with Pedro The Lion. We’ll hear selections from that release as well as Radioland: Radio-Activity Revisited, a new recording from Franck Vigroux and Matthew Bourne that reimagines German act Kraftwerk’s 1975 release Radio-Activity.

Jedd Beaudoin is host/producer of the nationally syndicated program Strange Currency. He has also served as an arts reporter, a producer of A Musical Life and a founding member of the KMUW Movie Club. As a music journalist, his work has appeared in Pop Matters, Vox, No Depression and Keyboard Magazine.
